How to change the WordPress login URL
After completion installation of WordPress, the first thing you’ll find is the form to login to the admin panel on the path/wp-login.php. One of the basic recommendations after installation is to change the path of this form for the following security reasons:
- The robots that perform brute force attacks, are programmed to automatically go to attack in the default path.
- For hackers will be easier to know what CMSÂ you are using and this may give clues to penetration attacks. So changing the path will hide the certain way you’re using WordPress.
- Some people always curious know the path to login to your control panel and may be this will refrain them from attempting to enter.
In this article, we will learn how to change the login path of WordPress in two different ways. One with WordPress plugin and another without plugin for medium or advanced users who already have more idea of how the back-end functions work.
Change the login path with a plugin
This is the easiest option because it involves the installation of a plugin which is quite easy to use.
In you WordPress Admin panel the to Plugins -> Add new.
Now let’s find the plugin “Lockdown WP Admin”.
Simply click on “Install Now”
Now on our menu of the administration panel, we will have a new item called “Lockdown WP”, go to the Lockdown WP -> Lockdown WP.
Here we will see the option to put the URL we want our login form.
Insert the value you want and click on save options.
And voila! With this plugin now we have our login path to a custom URL.
An option to enter the WordPress admin panel is to enter the/wp-admin. We can also give a touch of security to this.
With the same plugin, we can make this route is active only if you have previously logged by your custom route, otherwise if you try to access the result will be a 404.
Simply enable the option, as shown in the following image and save your changes again.
Change the login path through the .htaccess file
Although this is a little bit technical it is really simple. We have to manipulate the .htaccess file to override the URL and thus make customization.
To change the path we will follow three simple steps:
1- Go to the root of your site to locate the file. If you are on the console via SSH you can use VI, Nano or your favorite editor to edit the .htaccess file.
This file is usually hidden, so if you’re using an SFTP client/FTP will have to change in preferences to allow you to view hidden files and then open it with any text editor.
2- Add the following line of code at the beginning of the file
Http://tusitio.com/wp-login.php bananas RewriteRule ^ $ [NC, L]
You just have to replace “bananas” with the path you prefer, and tusitio.com the URL of your site.
Ending with something like this
Or maybe a few more lines if a plugin is using htaccess options.
3- Finally, you just have to save the file and everything will be ready. You can go totusitio.com/turuta and will reach the login form.
Hope has become clear the process to change the route of the form and give an extra touch of security to your WordPress site. If you have any questions you can leave it in the comments or better !:
